Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy:
Muhammad Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy, who played an important role in Pakistan’s independence movement and was the architect of Pakistan-China friendship, was the first prime minister in the country’s history to be arrested. He was kept in solitary confinement and was later released after serving 01 year and 10 months.
Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto:
The other was former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who was arrested in September 1977 for the murder of Nawab Ahmad Khan, and the architect of Pakistan’s Johar program was eventually sentenced to death by the Lahore High Court and the Supreme Court in Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi, about a year and a half later. Benazir Bhutto:
Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto’s daughter Benazir was the Prime Minister of Pakistan for two terms, the first female Prime Minister in Pakistani history. After the execution of her father, Benazir Bhutto, she was first in jail for six months and then in her home for six months. After that, once again in March 1981, the General Zia government arrested her once again and kept her in Sukkur Jail. Benazir Bhutto was released three years later in 1984.
Nawaz Sharif:
Nawaz Sharif, the three-time prime minister of Pakistan, also went to jail several times. After leaving the government in October 1999, Nawaz Sharif was kept in Adiala Jail for the first time for 425 days. Where Nawaz Sharif was arrested and sent to Adiala Jail where he was kept for two months.
After spending two months, the court suspended his sentence, but on 24 December 2018, he was re-arrested in the Al-Azizia reference and sent first to Adiala and then to Kot Lakhpat Jail, where about 239 days later, the Islamabad High Court sentenced him to medical grounds. Shahid Khaqan Abbasi:
On July 18, 2019, NAB arrested former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi in the LNG import case and sent him to Adiala Jail. He spent 223 days in jail and was released on bail from the Islamabad High Court.
Shahbaz Sharif:
Shahbaz Sharif, the 23rd and current Prime Minister of Pakistan, also faced arrest before becoming the Prime Minister. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) arrested Shehbaz Sharif from the premises of the Lahore High Court on September 28, 2020, due to the rejection of interim bail in the money laundering case.
Finally, after getting bail after 7 months, the current Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif was released from Kot Lakhpat Central Jail on 23 April 2021.
Imran Khan:
The 22nd Prime Minister of Pakistan and Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Imran Khan is the latest example on the list of arrested Prime Ministers.
