A new committee to select Pakistani films for Oscars has been announced. The Pakistan Academy Selection Committee has announced the members to select Pakistani films in the Best Foreign Language Film category for the 2024 Oscars.
The committee headed by Chairman Moo Naqvi includes eminent members from the film and entertainment industry of Pakistan.
Among the members of the committee are director and cinematographer Bilal Lashari, writer and director Saeem Sadiq, actor Fawad Khan, writer Fatima Bhutto, social worker Fariha Altaf, filmmaker Haya Fatima Iqbal, documentary filmmaker Madeeha Syed, filmmaker Mehreen Jabbar, actress Nadia Afgan and Ahmed Ali Akbar and others are involved.
Apart from this, award-winning producer, director, and editor Mehreen Jabbar is also a part of the committee. Last year, the Best Foreign Language Film category for the Oscars went to the Pakistani film Joyland, which won the Cannes Jury Award at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival and received acclaim on various platforms.
Over the next month, the committee will review the films that will be selected for the Oscars, selecting films that represent Pakistani cinema. The selected film will be submitted to the Academy Awards for the Best International Feature Film category, the press release said.
Muhammad Ali Naqvi, chairman of the Pakistan Academy Selection Committee, says that this new committee reflects the immense talent that is growing in Pakistan’s film industry.
He said it was an honor to work with such an extraordinary team to bring attention to the inspiring stories created by Pakistani filmmakers.
Muhammad Ali Naqvi added that the committee is currently reviewing the received films. He mentioned that he will officially announce Pakistan’s shortlisted film for the 96th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category by early October.
