Iffta Umar has revealed that she has seen many people being harassed in the showbiz industry. Eminent actress and former popular model Iffat Umar, talking about sexual harassment, said that sexual harassment is a big problem, many people cannot talk about harassment, but when they talk about this topic, they should be heard. The actress participated in YouTuber Shahzad Ghiyas Sheikh’s podcast where she talked about her career, women’s rights, and various other topics. Iffat Umar said, “I am not afraid of speaking the truth. If someone says something that he knows will cause severe reactions, I consider that person to be brave.”
She said ‘I say what I think is best, due to which I faced severe backlash, suffered mental and financial loss as well.’ The actress said that ‘due to speaking the truth, my friends started ignoring me, when I saw the change in people’s attitudes towards work, I stopped working in the showbiz industry.
‘Talking about her career, Iffat Umar said, “When I started modeling, I was only 16 years old. All women work in my house, so there is an atmosphere of feminism in my house.” During the hour-and-a-half-long podcast, Umat Umar shared her personal experience of working in Karachi as an actor, saying that she faced criticism from some upper-class people for not speaking good English and having a Punjabi accent.
He said that because of his Punjabi accent, he was looked down upon, not only that, but his Urdu accent was also questioned while on the set. The actress said that people from the upper class used to express surprise and say that ‘she doesn’t know how to speak English.’
Iffat Umar revealed that ‘people used to make fun of me because of my Punjabi accent, people on the set used to call me ‘Panju’ which means from Punjab. Talking about the experience of working in the media and the tone of speech, Ifat Umar said that no one supports each other.
He also pointed out that eminent actors and media professionals rarely speak out in support of their colleagues when it comes to issues of misbehavior on set or censorship of content. “Many young men and women can’t talk about harassment, but when they talk about it, if they are heard, that’s the only way to end this problem,” said Iffat Umar. He said that those who are being harassed should openly name the person so that they feel fear before doing such an act in the future.
The actress said that in a country where women are being raped, sharp objects are being thrown, children and girls are being raped, and dramas are being made on the subject where a woman is lying to be defamed.
