10 days after the global release of the Hollywood Movie ‘Barbie’, the Punjab Censor Board has allowed the screening of the film in cinemas. The Punjab Film Censor Board had allowed the screening of the movie Barbie on July 21, after which the administration banned the screening of the film the next day.
Earlier, Punjab Province Information Secretary Ali Nawaz Malik said that the caretaker government of the province has stopped the screening of the famous movie Barbie due to public complaints. On July 31, 2023, caretaker government Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi had directed the Censor Board to take a final decision regarding the screening of the Hollywood film.
After which a statement was issued from the Chief Minister’s Office that a full meeting of the Censor Board was held regarding the Movie Barbie, in which permission was given to show the film in Punjab, and the film was re-evaluated in the meeting. Holi’s new popular film ‘Barbie’ was released on July 21 in theaters across the world. In the movie Barbie, Hollywood star Margot Robbie played the role of the famous Barbie doll and Barbie’s boyfriend ‘Ken’. This role is played by famous actor Ryan Gosling.
Earlier this film was banned in Vietnam as well, as a map in the film showed the South China Sea region as part of China. On the other hand, this is not the first time that the censor board in Pakistan The film has been banned Earlier, the Cannes award-winning and Oscar-nominated Pakistani film Joyland was also banned by the government as ‘against social values’.
The film was later cleared after a review by the government, yet the ban was maintained by the Punjab Censor Board. In 2019, the film ‘Zindagi Tamasha’ was also banned after the film’s director was accused of blasphemy by a far-right religious group for portraying a religious man in the film.
